The Banana Roundup : Week 17

If you enjoyed this post,

Editor’s Note : I will be posting a weekly roundup of postings I enjoyed reading in the personal finance blogosphere. These bloggers can be found my Blogroll page. Whenever possible, if I come across a new one I like, I will add them to the Blogroll.

Cash Money Life shares us with 9 Tips to Save Money on Your Next Computer. I haven’t been able to get around to writing how I save money on my laptop but it is fairly the same approach he took. I went with the Vista program where he went with the XP. The XP is good if you still have old software that is compatible with XP but not Vista which will keep you from buying new software or upgrading for a fee. OpenOffice is something I have used for several months now and have found it quite useful, no major difference between Microsoft Office and OpenOffice programs.

There are many people who will give you their secrets to success. Dividends4Life provides us with a review of a web page that talks about 21 Suggestions for Success. I know I have a few of these suggestions down pat, but I still have to work on a few other areas because I am not as successful as I would like to be at my age. It will be a good idea to target my weaker areas to improve on by the age 35 so that I can at least get going with the rest of my life in a successful manner.

Dollar Frugal figured out a way to Make the Mundane Special when it comes to eating at home. Not only is dining out about paying someone to cook for you, or clean up after you, it is also about paying for the atmosphere. It may be just me, but I seem to notice how restaurants with fancy atmosphere charge more for their so-so meals versus restaurants with so-so atmosphere charge less for great meals. You can easily combine both at home with candles, cloth napkins, etc..

Yet another deep rumbling in your pocket as the airlines finds another way to charge you for flying by Travel Light, or Pay the Price as Her Every Cent Counts points out. This is why I like to fly regional airlines because they have a better business model that enables them to provide you with better fares and still make a profit without nickel and diming you to meet the bottom line like major airlines do.

LuluGal joined the latest round of 6 word memoirs with My Six Word Memoir. I participated too with my own memoir. It is certainly fun to follow the memoirs as you click on the link of those tagged on different blogs to see what they come up with. One of the bloggers she tagged came up with the best one yet. It amaze me to wonder how difficult it can be to come up with just six words and yet keep it simple and direct to the point.

Living Off Dividends hosted the 1st carnival of Dividends and Passive Income where my post on Tracking Your Prosper Portfolio with Money Plus was entered.

MoneyNing Ask if Consistent Income or One Time Payment are better. It is a good question to have because you could take the one time payment and invest it to create consistent income or you could live with just a consistent income for years until that money runs out and still invest that consistent income.

Moolanomy posted 34 Ways To Save Money On Car Expenses. All which are fairly common sense approach to help you trim your expenses during the latest gas price increases. At the moment, I am saving a lot because I don’t have a car but eventually I will be purchasing a car when I relocate to York. In the meantime, my brother and I were talking about scooters, these things may only have 1 to 2 gallons in their tank but they can get between 100 to 160 miles per gallon. Not a good idea for highways but certainly for short hops, especially in the cities. You would also be saving on insurance too. All this latest craze about gas prices spawned a host of reviews on how to save money including this one about MIMA Insight System where a simple innovation to use a rotation of a wheel on the road to help power your engine and get up to 100 mpg for your car.

Saving Diva asks whether Am I becoming an early bird? With her latest move from driving to work to bicycling every day, she is finding a change in her daily routine. Not only is she saving money, becoming healthier, she is also waking up earlier.

That’s it for the week. It has been fun reading all these articles. Check them out.

  1. I went w/ XP because I have a couple friends who reported problems w/ Vista. That, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of locating and downloading a bunch of new drivers for all my accessories!

    Thanks for the mention. :)

  2. Yeah, that’s the common issue with drivers and such with Vista compatibility. I did not need anything new or transfer stuff, just data so I have had no issue with Vista since. In fact, it is faster, and terrific media capabilities. I think it is just a matter of knowing what the hardware requirments for Vista is in order to ensure compatiability.

Another issue is Microsoft while they are currently considering pushing back the date for final distribution of XP, eventually XP will no longer be distributed. That was my final straw with Microsoft. Hopefully they will work out the kinks with the upgrades and stuff.

    Great article.

  3. Mark, thanks again for the shoutout!

    Brooke’s last blog post..Seedlings!

  4. Brooke, it was fun to read make the mundane special. It is not often you see the word “mundane” being used in a headline so you backed it up with simple but good points for those who are aware what dining out means to their wallet and would like to trim the costs.

  5. Thanks for the mention!

    Best Wishes,
